The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal assistance program (formerly food stamps) that gives households access to purchase food. In North Carolina, SNAP is also known as Food and Nutrition Services (FNS). SNAP is based primarily on household size and income. All households must meet an income test to receive benefits, and the income limits vary by household size.

For SNAP (FNS) application assistance, More In My Basket (MIMB) can help. MIMB is a program developed by Dr. Carolyn Bird at North Carolina State University. MIMB staff offer SNAP/FNS application assistance by phone. The MIMB SNAP application assistance process consists of:

  • Staff will ask you questions by phone while inputting that information into the application.
  • Once the application is complete, two copies will be sent by mail. One copy is for the applicant to keep, the second is to be signed and mailed (fax or in person drop off) to the local county Department of Social Services.
  • The completed application packet will also include additional resources that you may be eligible for.
