Collapse ▲The North Carolina Small Grain Growers Association Referendum will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Person County Extension Office at 304 South Morgan Street, Room 123 Roxboro, NC 27573.
Eligible individuals are North Carolina residents, 18 years of age or older on the voting date, and small grain growers producing wheat, oats, rye, barley, grain sorghum, or canola/rapeseed. Voters must sign the official affidavit-style registration sheet confirming age, residency, and grower status. Eligibility factors—such as age, residency, or ownership—may be challenged if necessary.
Once registered, voters may complete their ballot:
A “Yes” vote supports continuing the statewide small grain assessment program.
A “No” vote opposes continuation of the assessment.
This continuing assessment request, authorized by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services, Board of Agriculture on December 4th, 2025 will be effective January 1, 2026 only if Referendum is passed.
Importance of the Referendum
Mission – “Providing Positive Change for Small Grain Growers” since July 1986. Continuing the small grain assessment directly supports programs that benefit growers across North Carolina. Assessment funds are used for:
- Research, education, promotion, and marketing that strengthen the small grain industry.
- Support for FFA, 4-H, wheat yield contests, commodity events, field days, and statewide grower outreach.
- Youth and community agricultural education, including school programs, farm show demonstrations, and ag-awareness activities.
- A statewide network of 20 grower districts and agribusiness board members who help guide industry priorities.
- Scholarships for agriculture students, including the Small Grain Growers Scholarships and the Dan Weathington Endowment.
- A modest assessment rate of .005 on small grain sales, which funds all of these programs.
These efforts depend on grower support, and your vote helps determine whether they continue.
