During this coming winter, there will be three weeks of workshops targeted towards field crops producers (corn, wheat, soybean, and tobacco growers). These will be focused on topics that are not typically covered in annual crop production meetings but are still important topics for the producers of North Carolina. These will be offered in Person and Granville County at the respective Extension Center. Please see the workshops offered and register using the associated links. Grains Variety Selection Tool Training

Have you ever looked at the Official Variety Trial results and wanted additional information? Do you want to find the best way to identify varieties that will perform the best on your farm? Come out to this interactive training for the Variety Selection Tool developed by NC State. We will go over how to operate the tool, and go through case examples of how to identify specific information that is important to you and your operation. If you are able to, please bring a mobile device (preferably a laptop or tablet) so that you can explore the tool and go through examples during the workshop. There will be some devices to borrow if you do not have one, and this is not required to attend the workshop, just strongly suggested.

Understanding Soils and How to Manage Them

This workshop will go over some information on the basics of soil management (i.e. sampling strategies, soil test analysis) as well as some tools that can help bring your soil management to the next level. We will learn how to utilize the following tools:

Field Crops Price Risk Management

Join Nick Lassiter, from the NCDA&CS Division of Marketing for this workshop on “Managing Price Volatility/Identifying Macro Indicators”. The following topics will be covered: Introduction to Grain Hedging, Basis Trading, Cost of Carry, ICE Cotton Futures, Option Trading on Futures, Energy Derivatives, and macro forces impacting the hedger. There will be an emphasis on the principles of options, spreading strategies, and using options to manage agricultural price risk.
