Food Safety
Course

The Person County Cooperative Extension will be offering “NC Safe Plates” for all those who work in the food service industry. The course will help food establishments meet the requirement of having at least one supervisor certified as a food protection manager, which is a mandate of the NC Food Code. There will be instruction in personal hygiene, purchasing from reputable suppliers, eliminating cross-contamination, and correct temperatures for storing, preparing, and holding foods. Each year in the United States there are around 5,000 unnecessary deaths that occur from a food borne illnesses. Also, there are hundreds of hospitalizations, unnecessary medical expenses, lost time from work, loss of revenue from the business, customer mistrust, and the list goes one. “NC Safe Plates” will be offered by Person County Cooperative Extension on March 28 - 31, 2016 with the exam on April 4, 2016. Participants will receive a certificate required for inspections. The registration fee is $125 and is due by Wednesday, March 9th along with the registration form Please call the Person County Extension Office at 336-599-1195 or email jennifer_grable@ncsu.edu for more information.

Cook Smart Eat
Smart

The Person County Cooperative Extension Service is going to be hosting a Cook Smart, Eat Smart workshop onSaturday, April 9th from 9:00am - 4:00pm at the County Office Building. It is sponsored by our local Healthy Personians committee which is based out of the Person County Health Department. The Cook Smart Eat Smart curriculum teaches cooking techniques that can be used to build a repertoire of entrees and side dishes to encourage preparing and eating more meals at home.  There is an emphasis on healthy preparation techniques, simple ingredients and limited use of prepared foods.  In addition, information is presented to help participants plan, shop and stock a pantry that encourages simple meal preparation. Each session covers basic cooking techniques, nutrition, and other topics related to preparing and eating meals at home. Registration is $15 and class size is limited so it is first-come, first-serve. Call 336-599-1195 for more information or fill out the registration form.
