Eat Smart Move More
Weigh Less

If you ended up with a few of those extra holiday pounds and want to be sure to get rid of them before they decide to hang around, you might want to check out our Eat Smart Move More Weigh Less support group that will be on Tuesdays starting on February 3 from 12:10pm -12:50pm in the Person County FEMA Shelter and will last until May 12. The ESMMWL curriculum is based on weight loss strategies proven to work to help participants be successful in both losing weight and maintenance of a healthy weight.  There is a $15.00 registration fee for the 15 week series.  Check out the flier for more information and specifics. Stop by the Extension Center today to complete your Registration Form and pay your registration fee.

Cooking with
Herbs

Our next Lunch N' Learn session will focus on Cooking with Herbs. We will discuss the following: health benefits, herb and food combinations, herb recipe ideas as well as garnishes. It will be held on Friday, January 23rd from noon - 1pm at the County Office Building. The cost is $5 which covers lunch and your handouts. Pre-registration and pre-payment is required so call 336-599-1195 for more information or drop by the Extension Office at 304 South Morgan Street. Working Arts

The 2015 Working Arts Workshop is offering some new and exciting heritage skills classes. Whether you want to learn a new skill for fun or for income, you’ll have fun while learning. The annual Working Arts Workshop will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, February 18 and 19, 2015 in Roxboro at the Person County Office Building. The inclement weather dates for the program are February 25 and 26. This workshop is for people who want to learn a new craft for fun or those who wish to create products to sell in their crafts business. Choose from the following fun sessions: Chrismons; Basic Knitting; Intermediate Knitting; Crocheting; Rug Hooking; Hand Caning; Bob Ross Oil Painting; Basket making; Cake Decorating; Jewelry Making; and Pine-Needle Basket making. Some classes may be completed in one day while others require two days. The class descriptions and registration form are available online or in person at the Person County Extension Office at 304 South Morgan St., Room 161, Roxboro, NC 27573. The cost to attend the workshop includes a non-refundable registration fee of $10 that covers both days, plus the instructor fee for the workshop(s) you select. The registration form, $10 fee, and the Instructor Fee for your first choice class must be received at the Extension Center in the county in which you reside by January 9, 2015.  This event is sponsored by the NC Cooperative Extension Centers in Alamance, Caswell, Durham, Orange, and Person Counties. Space is limited in all classes so please register early to secure your space.

NC Safe Plates

The Person County Cooperative Extension will be offering “NC Safe Plates” for all those who work in the food service industry. The course will help food establishments meet the requirement of having at least one supervisor certified as a food protection manager, which is a mandate of the NC Food Code. There will be instruction in personal hygiene, purchasing from reputable suppliers, eliminating cross-contamination, and correct temperatures for storing, preparing, and holding foods. Each year in the United States there are around 5,000 unnecessary deaths that occur from a food borne illnesses. Also, there are hundreds of hospitalizations, unnecessary medical expenses, lost time from work, loss of revenue from the business, customer mistrust, and the list goes one. “NC Safe Plates” will be offered by Person County Cooperative Extension on March 16-19, 2015 with the exam on March 23, 2015. Participants will receive a certificate required for inspections. Early bird registration is $100 and due by February 27 along with the registration form.
